The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has pledged to cooperate with the Nigerian government to drive the implementation of the new Strategic Management Plan (SMP) 2020-2024 of the telecom regulator.
The new Strategic Management Plan was developed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to drive the growth and development of the Nigerian telecommunications industry.
Speaking at the virtual launch of the Plan yesterday, ATCON’s president, Mr. Olushola Teniola said it is key to the government’s drive Digital Economy vision and, “is expected to take its root from the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and the new National Broadband Plan 2020 – 2025 (NBP).
‘This Plan is expected to be more successful than the previous ones because ATCON will collaborate with the Minster of Communications and Digital Economy, NCC, NITDA, NigCoMSAT, Galaxy Backbone, USPF, and DBI to work the plan out with all other stakeholders especially our members through initiation of programmes in order to realise it set goals for the industry.
Teniola stressed that this plan should take into consideration the post COVID-19 pandemic in relation to regulation of the Nigerian telecom sector viz-a-viz the expectations of players in the industry.
He congratulated Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC and the management of NCC for developing the SMP, pledging that ATCON would “work with NCC in order to realise the listed deliverables of the plan for Nigeria and the generality of the people of our great country.”
The Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami while launching the SMP said it demonstrates the Commission’s serious improvement in performance matrix and its efforts in accelerating the implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) and the National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020 – 2025 of the Federal Government.
Earlier, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said the SMP is the fulcrum that will aid the NCC in driving its telecom regulatory mandate in the fast evolving telecoms industry, in the next five years. He said it will serve as a roadmap for the future of the Nigerian telecoms sector, taking into consideration the current and emerging trends in the industry and the numerous expectations of the diverse Stakeholders.
Dignitaries present at the launch include: Professor Adeolu Akande, Chairman, Board of Commissioners, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA; The Chairman Senate Committee on Communications, Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu who was represented by Distinguished Senator Obinna Agbo and about 700 captains of industries who connected virtually.
