MDXi Leads In Energy Efficiency, Environmental Sustainability

Published

MDXi, West Africa’s largest carrier-neutral data Center and a fully owned subsidiary of MainOne, is leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emission in its quest to promote sustainable development.

The need to maintain equilibrium between human development and preserve the environment has brought huge focus on carbon footprint and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management. Globally, a considerable number of environmentally responsible firms are becoming more mindful of their carbon footprint and the impact it has on the communities in which they operate.

One of such organizations, MDXi, a primary provider of colocation and data center services to organizations across West Africa has over the years implemented policies that have significantly reduced its carbon footprint in its facilities.

In a recent interview, Mr. Gbenga Adegbiji, MDXi Chief Operating Office stated that“In January 2021, MDXi recorded 100% availability of supply from the national grid through the Eko Electric Distribution Company (EKEDC).  This excellent availability record meant the company did not have to run any of our four heavy duty generating sets, thereby saving a huge amount of carbon emissions, and contributing our own quota to the environment. The availability means stability of all facility equipment and more peace of mind for our customers aside from the added benefit of reducing carbon footprint,”.

He also explained “the company has started to reap the full benefits of its green power initiatives embarked upon some years ago with an investment of close to $1m in direct connection of its Lekki Data Center to the national grid in order to enjoy 100% power availability from the grid. “

Since it launched in 2015, MDXi has operated carrier-neutral facilities and harnessed MainOne’s network footprint not only to interconnect all major network and content providers in the West African sub region, but also enable ISPs and virtual network operators connect to the Data Centers to provide services to hosted customers.

The organization has a focus on deliberate action and a commitment to doing what is right even though it comes at a high cost. Obtaining 100% of its power supply from the National Grid due to private investment implies the company can reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, even before construction commenced, the organization ensured that the Data Center was positioned in a location with access to the national grid.

“As a market leader in Data Center solutions, MDXi ensures that energy efficiency and environmental sustainability is a major aspect of our centers, like the upcoming Lekki 2 and Sagamu Data Centers and the new Appolonia Data Center (Accra) which received its Tier III design certifications and will be ready for commissioning in a couple of weeks” Adegbiji added.

There are ongoing efforts to explore additional green initiatives such as utilizing solar to generate power for the additional MDXi data center facilities located in Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Africa Data Centres Call for In-country Hosting of Cloud Services

Published

, SiliconNigeria

Africa Data Centres, one of the data center service providers in Africa and boast of the continent’s first network of interconnected, carrier and cloud-neutral data center facilities has called for in-country hosting of cloud services across Africa.

Dr. Krish Ranganath, Chief Technology Officer of Africa Data Centres, made the call at a Zoom Webinar with the theme ‘Bringing you to the Future: The Journey Towards a Cloud Lifestyle’, which was organised by CWG in partnership with Africa Data Centres and Zadara.

He highlighted the benefits of In-House cloud services to include optimal service performance, improved network, data localisation, payment in local currency, in-country support and proximity to data.

“Many companies worry about losing control over their data when it moves to the cloud, but when your company’s data is stored at a local cloud data center, you always know where your data is and how it is being protected,” he said.

He maintained that localisation of data must be a priority when considering the adoption of cloud computing, as scalable cloud computing resources located within the region mean that companies can take advantage of the cloud without the drawbacks of moving workloads to data centers that are farther away.

Explained that some industries have regulatory and compliance requirements that mandate that data is maintained locally, the Africa Data Centres CTO stated that Nigeria and other African countries need to start trusting their business which is locally grown. Such a gesture, according to him will provide numerous employment opportunities for the young talents and improve the economy.

“If your cloud provider is close by, you can even visit the cloud data center. Taking a tour will allow you to see what security resources are in place and to better understand the people and processes that exist to keep your cloud workloads secure and running smoothly,” he added.

Africa Data Centres is a business of Cassava Technologies Limited and a trusted partner to local and global enterprises for rapid and secure data centre services and interconnections in Africa.

Africa Data Centres owns and operates Africa’s largest network of interconnected, carrier and cloud-neutral data centre facilities. Strategically located, our world-class data centre facilities provide a home for business-critical data for enterprises in Africa. The company boasts of services such as colocation, pay-per-use power, cross-connects, Internet exchange, Cloud connections and Partner ecosystem.
